USA:M. Hildred Blewett Scholarship

To enable early-career women to return to physics research careers after having had to interrupt those careers. The scholarship consists of a one-year award of up to $45,000 (applicants can apply in a subsequent year for one additional year of support). Allowed expenses include dependent care (limited to 50% of the award), salary, travel, equipment, and tuition and fees. Overhead charges by the institution are not allowed.

The applicant must currently be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or resident alien of the United States or Canada. She must be currently in Canada or the United States and must have an affiliation with a research-active educational institution or national lab. She must have completed work toward a PhD. Applicants are strongly encouraged to be members of the American Physical Society.


History of the Award

The award was established from a generous bequest from M. Hildred Blewett, an accelerator physicist who died in 2004. Hildred Blewett was passionate about physics and wanted to help women overcome obstacles by establishing the scholarship.

Rules & Eligibility

The applicant must currently be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or resident alien of the United States or Canada. She must be currently in Canada or the United States and must have an affiliation with a research-active educational institution or national lab. She must have completed work toward a PhD.

All applications are reviewed by a sub-committee of the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics. The Blewett Scholarship application process opens in the fall and the application deadline is in June 2011.

The Curtin Canning College Science International Bursary is available to international students enrolling at Curtin University in 2011 who have demonstrated high-level academic achievement in their studies at Canning College, and obtained an ATAR (TER) of at least 96 or equivalent in 2010.

Merdeka Scholarships For The Malaysians At University Of Oxford

Chinese Ministry of Education-University of Oxford Scholarships for Asian, UK

This scheme aims to provide Chinese students who demonstrate both academic excellence and leadership potential with the opportunity to study for a DPhil at the University of Oxford.

The scholarships are supported jointly by the China Scholarship Council (on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of Education) and the University of Oxford.

Am I eligible?

Candidates should be applying to start a new DPhil course in any subject at the University of Oxford. They must be from the mainland Peoples’ Republic of China (i.e. not Hong Kong or Macao) and must have graduated from one of the211 project universities.

Candidates must demonstrate both academic excellence and the potential to become a leader in their field, a decision-maker and opinion former within China. They must be prepared to return home upon completion of their studies.
What does it cover?

100% of university and college fees, a grant for living expenses (the rate for 2010-11 is £11,700), and one return airfare (China-UK-China).

Awards are made for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course. The continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.
How do I apply?

1) Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting Chinese Ministry of Education – University of Oxford Scholarships in the Funding Section of the University’s Graduate Application Form. Candidates should apply by Application Deadline 2 (7 January 2011 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 14 January 2011 for Said Business School applicants; 21 January 2011 for all other subjects).

CEMACUBE Masters Scholarship 2011 in Biomedical Engineering

In September 2010 an Erasmus Mundus Master’s course, called CEMACUBE (Common European MAster’s CoUrse in Biomedical Engineering) will start. Recently the grant application, submitted by RuG and UMCG, is accepted. Goal of this course is to prepare students from Europe and outside Europe for professions in Biomedical Engineering.

For a single university it is difficult to have enough knowledge of all sub-specialisations in Biomedical Engineering to teach their students on an adequate level. Also the required European scope is difficult to gain when students stick to a single university. Therefore a consortium of 6 universities has joined their knowledge and specific expertise into a 2-year European Master’s in Biomedical Engineering.

During the first year (semester 1 and 2), a student will follow lectures on all biomedical engineering subjects at one of the six universities, the 3rd semester (s)he will move to one of the participating universities to follow lectures on a specific topic, like medical imaging, tissue engineering or artificial organs. The fourth and last semester, a Master’s project will be performed on this specialisation at one of the 6 participating universities: the Universities of Groningen (The Netherlands), Aachen (Germany), Dublin (Ireland), Ghent and Brussels (Belgium) and Prague (Czech Republic). Each student will receive a double degree. Admission criteria are: a Bachelor in engineering and good knowledge of English (all teaching will be given in English), a convincing motivation letter and letters of reference.

Students that followed this European Master’s course in Biomedical Engineering are trained with a Europan view, experienced in intercultural and interdisciplinary teamwork. They will have a broad overview of the entire field of BME.

William S. Lee International Study Scholarships

Lee International Study Scholarships are intended to:(1) Help undergraduate students understand how to apply engineering, science, and technology within a global societal context, (2) Better prepare undergraduate students to contribute in a global economy, (3) Promote an awareness of and appreciation for cultural diversity, (4) Generate undergraduate student interest in international study and internships, (5) Offer more affordable international exchange opportunities to our undergraduate students.

Awards will be made to undergraduate students wishing to pursue international experiences that offer academic credit toward completion of their degree. Individual scholarship awards will vary in amount depending on the cost and length of the exchange program. Scholarships will be awarded to students who are recognized for attributes that Mr. Lee, former CEO of Duke Power and for whom the college is named, considered fundamental for success.

UK:Ramsay Memorial Fellowships for Chemical Research

Fellowship Description: The Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust was constituted in 1920 for the purpose of administering the award of Ramsay Memorial Fellowships for Chemical Science. The Fellowships comprise a British Ramsay Fellowship and a number of overseas Fellowships.

The Ramsay Memorial Fellowships constitute a long standing scheme of international cooperation originated as a memorial to Sir William Ramsay, KCB, FRS, with a view to promoting the development of the science of chemistry by encouragement of individual ability at the highest level.

British Ramsay Fellowships are awarded annually by the Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust to distinguished chemists, so that they may conduct research at universities in the United Kingdom. Ramsay Fellows are typically mature research chemists who usually continue their work in the chemistry field after their Fellowships have ended. Many have become esteemed Professors of Chemistry; others have gone on to occupy responsible positions in industry and public service.

Within the overall scheme the British contribution to this elite group is drawn from people of the requisite standard from the British Commonwealth, who are nominated by an Advisory Council consisting of Professors of Chemistry at UK universities.

Overseas Ramsay Fellows are nominated and their Fellowships financed by agencies in their countries of origin, although the Trust bestows the award of these Fellowships and handles the administration. Countries currently cooperating in awarding Ramsay Fellowships are Japan, the Netherlands and New Zealand, although past participants have also included Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

The British Ramsay Fellowships are financed out of the income from a Trust Fund set up by public subscription in 1922 and strengthened by donations from industry in 1953. The continuing fall in the purchasing value of the Trust’s income, however, has meant that the Trust has increasingly had to look to attracting financial support from outside sponsors and donors to ensure that it is able to maintain the level of award of British Fellowships each year. In 1988 a scheme was instituted whereby British Ramsay Fellowships could be co-sponsored by British industrial companies, and more recently this has been extended to include the host institutions and/or Chemistry Departments of British Ramsay Fellows.

For nearly one hundred years, The Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust has played a vital role in supporting young scientists at the start of their careers. Like Sir William, the Ramsay Fellows have made many important discoveries that have changed our world.

USA:Kyotto Scholarships 2011-2012

The Kyoto Symposium Organization, The San Diego Foundation, and the Inamori Foundation of Kyoto, Japan invite all high schools in the City and County of San Diego (public, private and parochial), as well as Tijuana-area high schools, to participate in the 2011-2012 Kyoto Scholarships. Research Fellowship On HIV and Drug Use, Switzerland

With the support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the International AIDS Society (IAS) has established a research fellowship programme focusing on HIV and drug use, with the goal of contributing to advances in the scientific understanding of drug use and HIV, while fostering international collaborative research on HIV and drug use.

The fellowship programme is awarded as a stipend of US$75,000 in two categories: to a junior scientist for 18-month post-doctoral training, or to a well-established HIV researcher for an eight-month-long professional development training at leading host institutes excelling in HIV-related drug use research.

In 2011, up to four fellowships will be awarded. The fellows and their mentors will be invited to attend the IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011), to be held in Rome, Italy, on 17-20 July 2011, where the awards ceremony will be held.

Eligibility
Post-doctoral training:
Junior investigators with a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD) obtained no more than six years before the time of application in the fields of behavioural and social sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics or public health (other disciplines may also be considered) are eligible. Applicants must hold a doctorate degree or equivalent before the start of the fellowship, but not necessarily when applying.

Professional development training:
The fellowship is geared towards well-established HIV or drug use scientists who are not currently active in the field of HIV-related drug use research, with a minimum of seven years’ experience beyond post-doctoral level, and with a documented scientific record that includes peer-reviewed publications.

Applications are encouraged from any country, but preference will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries. As there are numerous national opportunities for research training within the US, applications from US citizens and permanent residents for fellowships within the US will not be accepted.

All applicants must choose a mentor in an institution different from their current institution.

Applicants must be able to start their fellowships before 1 June 2012.

Applications must be completed in English.

Application
Applications for the 2011 programme must be submitted by the prospective fellow through the online application form that will be available on the IAS website from 8 December 2010 until 10 February 2011 (until midnight CET). Applicants will be asked to detail their research goals, provide an abstract of their proposed project, and write a research plan for the duration of their fellowship. The research project must be related to HIV and drug use, e.g., narcotics and alcohol.

Applicants must have chosen an appropriate mentor who holds an established post for the duration of the fellowship and has a track record in research and training in HIV and drug use. Applicants must confirm that the host institute and the mentor can guarantee that space and facilities will be made available for the prospective fellow if he/she is successful in obtaining the fellowship.

After the applicant submits his/her application, the mentor must then complete his/her part of the application, specifying the support that he/she will provide to the applicant, and assess the impact that the fellowship will have on the applicant’s future career.

Selection
Applications are screened by the IAS to ensure that they are complete and eligible. All eligible applications will be independently assessed by at least two external experts.

Once applications have been reviewed, based on the reviewers’ assessments, the fellows will be selected. Selection is based on grades, reviewers’ comments, and the maximum impact each fellowship would bring to the treatment and/or prevention of HIV/AIDS and drug use, as well as to collective capacity building in the recipient’s home country.

The outcome of the selection will be made public approximately 10 weeks after the closing date. Fellows will be immediately notified by email. The fellowships must be started any time between 1 August 2011 and 1 June 2012.

Duration: Fellowships must be served continuously for the duration of the award. Fellows must start their research before 1 June 2012.

Terms: The award of US$75,000 will be made available to the host institution, which will provide the stipend to the fellow in accordance with its usual regulatory procedures. The stipend may cover only the cost of living, personal expenses (e.g., health and accident insurance) and one return journey to the country of origin during the fellowship period. The stipend may not be supplemented with funds from the NIH or any other US federal agency or another fellowship, regardless of the source. The fellow may receive supplemental support from other sources, providing that the additional funds do not impose a service and do not exceed a maximum of US $10,000 per year.

Work permit:
The mentor and the host institution are responsible for supporting the fellow in obtaining the necessary visa and work permit, insurance and ethical approval to conduct his/her research in accordance with national requirements and the host institution’s regulatory procedures.

Reporting:
Fellows and mentors must provide intermediary progress reports to the IAS every six months during the fellowship period, based on the template they will receive, as well as a final fellowship report, including an expenses report.

e8 Scholarship Programme 2011 in Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED)

Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED) was selected by the e8 as the theme for the 2004-2005 Chairmanship Year. The year 2005 marked the start of the UN Decade for Education and thus constituted an opportunity for e8 leadership and profile in the area of education with a focus on sustainable energy development. An e8 report on ESED in Africa, Asia and Latin America provide the background for this selection.

The purpose of the e8 scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

The e8 considers an outstanding student to be one

•who graduates with excellent grades in the top 20% of her/his class
•who is determined to advance her/his knowledge and understanding
•who has a history of community involvement
•who is committed to sustainable energy
•who is committed to return and contribute to her/his home country

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must

•plan to undertake studies at the Masters level in areas directly related to sustainable energy development

•be citizens of the developing countries and territories identified for OECD official development aid in the DAC List of ODA Recipients effective as of 2006

What are the levels of financial assistance and the duration of the scholarships?

Scholarships of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Masters level students. Up to ten Masters scholarships will be awarded annually.

How are applications judged?

An Academic Panel consisting of accomplished representatives from Europe, North America and Japan will review the applications. All selections are final and all applicants will be notified.

How will I receive the funds?

Awards will be directly deposited (in US$) into the accounts of the Institution where you are enrolled and provided to you on a regular basis as long as you are making satisfactory progress toward achieving your academic or research requirements.

What are my obligations to the e8 if I am selected?

You are expected to complete your degree or your research, update e8 about your progress and publish your results. You are required to acknowledge the e8 support when publishing or making presentations on your research and results. We may ask you to present your results at an e8 function, in which case your out of pocket expenses incurred to make the presentation will be covered by the e8.

The Institute for Society and Globalisation (ISG) specialises in interdisciplinary research and teaching in the social sciences. Roskilde University is a leading Danish university emphasising interdisciplinary research, project-based learning, and socially-relevant engagement. The Doctoral School of the ISG announces PhD scholarships for employment from the 1st December 2010 in the following research theme: Globalisation and Europeanisation.
