UK:Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarships tenable in the United kingdom 2011 for Sri Lankans

Applications are entertained from eligible persons for the award of Postgraduate Scholarships offered under the Commonwealth and Fellowships Plan. These awards are tenable at Institutions of Higher Learning in the United Kingdom for the academic year commencing in September/ October 2011. Prospects can also be accessed from Commonwealth Selection Committee website, at www.cscuk.org.uk.



01. Field of Study : Awards remain open to all disciplines, but preference will be given to areas relevant to national development.

02. Tenure : (a) one year taught masters courses or equivalent degrees.

(b) six months of clinical training in medicine or dentistry.

(c) doctoral degrees, of up to three years duration.

(d) one year research on a split- site basis, towards a PhD registered at a Sri Lankan University.

03. Termination : Any scholarship may at the discretion of the appropriate authority be terminated at any time owing to misconduct, irregularity of attendance, absence from classes or hostel without prior approval of the authority concerned and the unsatisfactory progress in studies or failure at examinations of the holder of such scholarship. If any scholarship is terminated the scholar may be required to return to Sri Lanka at his/her own expenses.

04. General Eligibility Requirements:

Each candidate should

(a) Be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
(b) Be less than 40 years of age on 03.09.2010
(c) Possess a First or a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours Degree from a recognized University.
(d) Be employed in the public sector, University or a state Corporation. – Note (ii) and (iii)
(e) Possess high proficiency in English. To prove this the candidate must have sat either IELTS or TOEFL and obtained high marks.
(f) In the fields of medicine and dentistry, the candidate must have qualified as a Doctor or a Dentist between 1 October 2001 and 30 September 2006.

  • For Business Administration and/or Management and other related fields must have taken the Graduate Management Test (GMAT)
  • For Economics or related subjects must have taken the Princeton Graduate Record Examination(GRE)
  • For medicine and dentistry should possess qualifications registerable with the General Medical Council or the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom
  • Those who are successful at the interview will be further required to pass IELTS examination conducted by the British Council and should obtain an overall score of not less than 6.5
  • For Arts and Music should submit appropriate specimen work (slides, cassettes etc.) with their applications.
  • 6. Applications :

    (a) Every application should conform to the specimen form provided.
    (b) The words “Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarships – U.K. – 2011” should be hand or type-written on top left corner of the envelope containing the application.
    (c) Each Applicant should submit only one application for single course of study, and should state whether he/she has been nominated for a similar award in the past.
    (d) A non-refundable stamp fee of Rs. 50/= is payable in respect of each application. A stamp to this value should be affixed in the cage provided for this purpose in the application and cancelled by the applicant’s signature.
    (e) No application from an employee of government sector, University or a state Corporation will be entertained unless channeled through the Head of the Institution concerned. He/She should in forwarding the application appropriately complete the certificate in cage 17 of the application.
    (f) No application will be entertained from a person who has entered into an agreement or bond to serve the Government of Sri Lanka, a State Sector Institute unless he/she shall have completed by 03.09.2010, the full period specified in such agreement or bond and shall have discharged fully all the other obligations under such agreement or bond.

    Note:

    However, an application of a University academic who has studied abroad on his/her own expense or on a scholarship received from a source other than through his/her University, can be considered if he/she has completed at least 2 years of his /her mandatory service period as per the agreement provided that the Vice Chancellor recommends the application as per the provisions of the University Establishment Code

    (g) Any statement in the application, which is found to be incorrect, will render the applicant liable to disqualification, if the inaccuracy is discovered before selection and to the withdrawal of award, if discovered after selection.

    (h) Any application, which is not sent through the proper channels or is incomplete in any respect or received late, will be rejected.

    (i) Closing date: Applications will be accepted only up to 04.00 p.m. on 03.09.2010
