USA:The National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports early career scholars working in critical areas of education research. This nonresidential postdoctoral fellowship funds proposals that make significant scholarly contributions to the field of education. The program also develops the careers of its recipients through professional development activities involving National Academy of Education members.

Fellowship Awards:

* Fellows will receive $55,000 for one academic year of research, or $27,500 for each of two contiguous years, working half-time.
* Fellowships must begin during the 2011-2012 academic year.
* Fellows take the equivalent of one year’s teaching leave during the fellowship term.
* Fellows will be included in professional development retreats with other fellows and NAEd members.
* Up to twenty postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in 2011.
* Selection will be made by a committee of NAEd members.

Qualifications and guidelines:

The NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is open to all eligible applicants regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

* Applicants must have received their PhD, EdD, or equivalent research degree between
January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2010.
* Applicant should have a demonstrated record of research experience in education.
* Proposed project must be an education research project. NAEd funds studies that examine the efficacy of curriculum and teaching methods, however, we do not fund the initial development of curriculum or instructional programs.
* Applications will be judged on the applicant’s past research record, career trajectory in education research, and the quality of the project described in the application.
* Applications must be made by the individual applying for the fellowship; group applications will not be accepted.
* Non-US citizens are welcome to apply.
* Concurrent funding for the proposed project is not permitted. You may not hold a grant from the Spencer Foundation at the same time as this fellowship.

UK:The Pöyry Engineering Scholarship for International Students

Pöyry Energy is a major provider of front end and specialist consultancy services to the Oil & Gas industry in Europe, the Asia Pacific Region and the Middle East.

The scholarship is open to full time students commencing third year of any of the undergraduate degree programmes listed below in September 2010:

* MEng Chemical Engineering (H810)
* MEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with Energy Studies (H3H2)
* MEng Mechanical Engineering with Control (H3HP)

The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum and will be awarded to the successful applicant for the rest of their undergraduate degree programme.

The successful applicant will receive £2,000 per annum for each of years 3, 4 and 5 of their undergraduate degree programme (i.e. £6,000 over 3 years).

You should note that the scholarship is open to all students commencing the third year of any of the eligible degree programmes listed above in September 2010, regardless of nationality, where they are domiciled, or fee structure to which they belong to.

The scholarship will be subject to the scholarship recipient successfully completing each year of their degree to the satisfaction of the School of Engineering. Where a scholarship recipient is required to repeat a year because they failed to reach the required academic requirements, payment will not be made for the repeat year and resumption of the scholarship will be based on individual circumstances and will be at the discretion of the Head of School of Engineering. The scholarship can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

Germany: EBRAMUS PhD Position in Neuroscience (Music & Communication), Max Planck Institute, Leipzig

The European Initial Training Network EBRAMUS (Europe BRAin and MUSic) is offering a PhD position for up to three years at the Max Planck Institute for Human Brain and Cognitive Sciences (Leipzig, Germany) in the research group “Neurocognition of rhythm in communication”.

The successful candidate will work on the project “Facilitatory effects of temporal and rhythmic music cues in local and hierarchical syntactic processing” and conduct behavioural, ERP and fMRI research in healthy and patient (stroke, Parkinson) populations. The PhD project will investigate how and when temporal and rhythmic cues facilitate syntactic processes of various complexities during auditory language processing.

The candidate must have a Masters degree in experimental psychology, neuroscience, neurolinguistics, or neuropsychology; experience with EEG and/or fMRI techniques and an interest in combined language/music research; knowledge of research designs, statistical skills and computer programming skills (Presentation, MATLAB). Knowledge or proficiency of German is not required but a plus; candidates will be encouraged to learn German during the PhD programme. Please note the programme-specific eligibility criteria.*

The research will be conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, an internationally leading centre for cognitive and imaging neuroscience equipped with a 7.0 T MRI scanner, three 3.0 T MRI scanners, a 306 channels MEG system, a TMS system and several EEG suites. All facilities are supported by experienced IT and physics staff. The institute offers a lively, international and interdisciplinary research environment. PhD students have the opportunity to participate in the curriculum of the International Max Planck Research School.

The successful candidate will benefit from the expertise united in the EBRAMUS training network, including collaborations with network partners with relevant expertise in music and language research, implicit learning, as well as methodological expertise. EBRAMUS is a consortium of European research centres to study new perspectives for stimulating cognitive and sensory processes using music.

United Nations Fellowship Programme (UNFCCC Germany) for Government’s Employees

The objective of the fellowship programme is to contribute to building capacity for addressing climate change in non-Annex I Parties, in particular small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) Parties, through the development of local professional expertise by:

* Supporting innovative analytical work on climate change in the context of sustainable development;
* Promoting a network of experts who can bring creative and innovative options to bear on questions of climate change;
* Encouraging the leadership potential of young and promising professionals in their fields.


The programme target group consists of mid-career professionals who are already in a government’s employment and who are nationals of and working in a developing country, particularly a SIDS and LDC Party. While fellowships are awarded to individuals, the need for training must occur within the context of the institution for which an applicant works. The training must help the institution to develop its capacity. This means that the applicants must:

* Obtain permission from their employer for leave of absence for the term of the fellowship, and provide written certification that s/he will return to the Party’s governmental institution addressing climate change after her/his fellowship for at least six month;
* Get a written certification from their employer that the subject of the proposed training is relevant to the needs of the organization.

This programme is not intended for students, and does not provide financial support for an advanced degree, such as fieldwork for a PhD degree.

Eligibility
The fellowship programme is open to individuals working in a broad range of governmental organizations, ranging from educational institutions, research institutes and ministries. Candidates must meet the following criteria:

* Be a national of, and work in an organization located in pre-selected countries/regions;
* Normally be no more than 40 years of age on the closing date of application;
* Have preferably completed a Master degree, or equivalent, at the time of application, and a minimum of 3 years of work experience. Candidates with a first degree and a minimum of five years work experience may also be considered;
* Have good communication skills in English

Priority will be accorded to candidates from SIDS and LDC countries.

Opportunities for work projects and working conditions
There are a wide range of opportunities for fellows in the secretariat. Work projects may be carried out in any of the secretariat programmes on a number of issues e.g.. future of climate change, technology, financial assistance, inventories, mechanisms, etc…

The exact work programme to be pursued will be determined in consultation with each fellow according to her/his own area of expertise and interest. Once the work programme is determined, the selected fellow will be placed in the relevant secretariat programme, under the supervision/guidance of a programme officer designated by the hosting programme.

Fellows are expected to prepare an analytical paper of 20 - 30 pages containing the results of their work at the end of the fellowship period. The paper should be prepared in English to the extent possible, but may also be submitted in French or Spanish. In special cases, the paper may be prepared in one of the other official languages of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, or Russian). The paper will be reviewed by secretariat staff and the secretariat will maintain publication rights.

Conditions
The fellowship programme annually awards up to five fellowships.

* Fellowships are awarded for a period of three to six months.
* Fellowships shall normally begin within six months after the award being offered.
* Fellowship periods will be individually arranged to accommodate, to the extent possible, the particular needs of each fellow.
* The award is a fixed, non-negotiable sum which is intended to cover living expenses at the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn. In addition, the programme covers travel costs by the least costly route.
* Each fellow must obtain medical clearance and also provide proof of health insurance with full international coverage before traveling to Germany. It is the responsibility of the fellow to arrange for insurance against risks occurring during the fellowship.
* Fellows are responsible for making their own housing and other arrangements, although assistance in securing accommodation may be provided.
* Accompanying family members will not be covered and are the sole responsibility of the fellow.
* Fellows are not eligible to apply for advertised positions within the secretariat within six months following the conclusion of their assignment with the secretariat.

Germany:Klaus Hasselmann Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology is pleased to announce postdoctoral research opportunities through its recently founded Klaus Hasselmann Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Klaus Hasselmann Fellows receive up to three years of support to conduct independent research in one of the departments of MPI-M. In addition to the salary the fellowship provides each fellow with a modest budget to use at their discretion, support for relocation expenses, as well as full access to the breadth of human, numerical, observational, and computational resources available at one of the world’s premier laboratories for climate research.


Each year one fellowship will be awarded in one of three general areas of Earth system modelling: land-surface & terrestrial biosphere interactions; ocean science; atmospheric science. New Zealand:HOPE Foundation Scholarships in Ageing Research 2010

These Scholarships, established in 2003, are to support scientists in the early stages of their careers conducting research into ageing. The HOPE Foundation wishes to encourage more research into ageing phenomena both individual and societal, because it believes that as the nation ages, the issues to be addressed in order to cope with the effects of an ageing population will be widespread throughout New Zealand society.


Title

The Scholarship shall be known as the HOPE Foundation Scholarships in Ageing Research.

Tenure and Value

One Scholarship of $4,000 will be awarded annually, for a period of one year, and may be renewable for up to three years.

Eligibility

Candidates must:
“be enrolled or be intending to enrol full-time for a Masters or Doctoral thesis at Massey University in a topic related to ageing.
“be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
Applications will be accepted from a wide range of disciplines in line with the HOPE Foundation’s philosophy of encouraging eclectic research into ageing and its effects on individuals and society.

Criteria
The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the quality of the research proposal.

Responsibility for the Award
The Scholarship shall be awarded by the University Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the HOPE Foundation Selection Committee.

Payment
The emolument will be paid in two equal instalments on confirmation of enrolment in semester one in April and semester two in August.

Conditions
Scholarship recipients may hold other awards at the same time as the HOPE Foundation Scholarship in Ageing Research.

Recipients will be expected to acknowledge the HOPE Foundation’s support in any publication, monograph, report or presentation that results from the research.

The HOPE Foundation will not restrict the publication of research results by the recipient of a scholarship or his/her research team. However, from time to time, in order to enhance its own public profile as a research-supporting entity, the HOPE Foundation will seek to negotiate with research teams the publication of reports on research progress and/or outcomes in some agreed form on its web site and in its printed communications.

The Scholarships Committee, in consultation with the HOPE Foundation has the power to terminate or suspend a Scholarship, if it receives an unsatisfactory report on the progress of a Scholar from the Head of Academic Unit in which the recipient is enrolled.

The Selection Committee is not obligated to make an award if in any year there are no candidates of sufficient merit.

The Scholarships Committee has the power to amend or vary these Regulations, in consultation with the HOPE Foundation, provided there is no departure from the main purpose of the Scholarships.
