USA:Merit Fellowships/Graduate Society Term Time Research Awards Post – Prospectus Stage, Harvard University

The Harvard Merit Fellowships and Graduate Society Term Time Awards for Dissertation Research are nowsimilar in terms of eligibility requirements and stipend; they are available to outstanding GSAS students in allfields, including the natural sciences (separate applications no longer exist). These fellowships are normally tobe held in the fourth or fifth year, or earlier, and are for the purpose of allowing the students to devote a greaterportion of their time to research, fieldwork, and writing than would otherwise be possible. Students must havepassed Generals and have an approved dissertation prospectus at the time of nomination, or be scheduled tohave approval by the time the award begins (the award otherwise will be forfeited if approval does notmaterialize).The maximum grant is a single term standard cohort stipend (in FY10 it was $11,165 but may be subject tochange for the coming year). The award is taken for one semester, either fall or spring. During the semester that theaward is held, teaching is restricted to 1/5 (one section), with no restriction in the non-fellowship term.

Merit/Term Time candidates may be in any field within GSAS. All candidates must have passed Generalsand have an approved dissertation prospectus at the time of nomination, or must be scheduled to have anapproved prospectus by the time the award begins (the award otherwise will be forfeited if approval does notmaterialize). Normally, at the time of nomination, the candidates will be in the third or fourth year of thedoctoral program – or earlier.Please Note: Under a new policy, students will be allowed to combine the merit/term time fellowship stipendswith additional fellowships, with a cap of $32,000 stipend. The United States Education Foundation in Pakistan invites applications for the Fulbright Scholar Program. The program seeks to improve mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Pakistan through academic and cultural exchange This program funds up to 10 monlhs of lectureship, post-doctoral research, or a combination of the two at a U.S. college or university. USA:Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship program is designed to:

1. increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities;
2. increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy;
3. recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and
4. recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with “hands-on”/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

* U.S. citizenship.
* Full-time status as a college sophomore at an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. territories.
* Cumulative and semester/quarter GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in all completed undergraduate courses and in the major field of study.

Canada:Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program is a merit-based scholarship. Awards are available to students in all disciplines of academic study. An Ontario Graduate Scholarship is awarded for one academic year, which may consist of two or three consecutive terms.

The OGS program is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the postsecondary institution. The Province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of the value of the award and the university provides one-third. For 2011-2012, the Province of Ontario will provide about $30 million towards these scholarships and eligible institutions will provide $15 million.

Age

You must be at least 16 years of age.
Citizenship
If you are a Canadian citizen you are eligible to be considered for an OGS award. If you are in any of the following citizenship categories, statuses, you must have obtained that status no later than the OGS application deadline date in order to be considered for an OGS award:

– Permanent Resident
- Protected Person [under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act (Canada)]
-Temporary resident visa as a member of the student class under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)
Eligible Program
You must be taking an eligible program, which is defined as a full-time program of study of two or three terms at an eligible institution leading to a graduate degree. Each of the components that determine an eligible program is outlined below.

You must be enrolled as a full-time student, as defined by the institution. To be considered a full-time student, you must meet the following conditions:
- be pursuing studies as a full-time occupation;
- not be employed, for more than an average of 10 hours per week for any term during registration as a full-time graduate student. The Luce Scholars Program in Asia

Each year, the Henry Luce Foundation invites Harvard University to nominate two to three students or alumni as candidates for the Foundation's national search for fifteen to eighteen Luce Scholars.

The goal of the Luce Scholars Program is to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in American society. The program is aimed at a group of highly qualified young American in a variety of professional fields who have limited experience in Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia. The Luce Scholar Year is a cultural and experiential opportunity rather than an academic one. Students are not enrolled in colleges or universities and no academic credit is extended for the program. Luce Scholars gain new perspectives and cultural insights through immersed living and working experiences in Asia. A professional placement is individually arranged for each scholar on the basis of his or her professional interest, background, and qualifications.

Presently, the Luce Foundation can place Scholars in the following countries or regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Luce Scholars competition is open to Harvard College seniors, recent graduates of Harvard College, Harvard graduate students, and recent graduates of Harvard graduate or professional schools.. Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. who have not reached their 30th birthday by September 1st of the year they enter the program.

D.A.A.D (German Academic Exchange Service) Grants for Study and Research in Germany

An agreement between the D.A.A.D (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, or German Academic Exchange Service) and Harvard University provides Harvard graduating seniors, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows the opportunity to apply for study or research scholarships in Germany.

Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. Applicants should have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential. Applicants in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a strong command of the German language.

Study Scholarships are awarded to highly qualified graduating seniors, graduate students, and recent Harvard University graduates of all disciplines to do independent study or to undertake a full Master's degree in Germany.

Research Scholarships are awarded to highly qualified doctoral candidates (Ph.D. candidates and other doctoral degrees) and post-doctoral fellows who wish to pursue research at German universities, institutes, or archives.

South Africa:UJ-CSIR Scholarships 2011

The University of Johannesburg (UJ)and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) established ajoint bursary programme in 2007.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be SA citizens.
• Scholarships are awarded on the basis that students commence full-time study at Honours, Master’s or Doctoral
level at the UJ in 2011.
• Applicants must ensure that their research area falls within one of the specified disciplines or in closely related disciplines (see Section 3 below).
• The scholarship-holder may not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the scholarship, but he/

Canada: Postdoc Position in High Performance Computing, Memorial University

The project “High Performance Computing for Geophysical Applications”, an interdisciplinary project between the Departments of Earth Science, Physics and Physical Oceanography, and Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, is seeking candidates for TWO Post- Doctoral Fellowship positions. The purpose of this project is to develop algorithms and software for the numerical modelling and inversion of geophysical data using high-performance, multi-core, shared- memory computer architectures. Development will be carried out on a dedicated large-scale multiprocessor computer that is to be purchased as part of the project.

Particular goals of the project include: the implementation of an interactive 3D pre-stack seismic migration algorithm for multi-core, shared-memory computational environments; the implementation of
adaptive beam-forming methodology on a parallel computational architecture; and the development of 3D seismic and joint seismic–gravity–EM inversion algorithms. The two Post- Doctoral Fellows will be expected to contribute towards the attainment of these goals.

The successful candidates will have a PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Computational Science, or similar discipline with a background in scientific computation and experience programming in at least one of
the two major languages FORTAN90 and C/C++. Candidates who are in the final year of a PhD programme and who will have completed all the requirements for their programme by the start date of the position will also be considered.

The positions are for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year subject to budgetary constraints. The start-date for both positions is negotiable, but before April 1st 2011 is preferred. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Belgium:PhD Position in Scientific Computing at K.U.Leuven

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics

division of the Computer Science Department at K.U.Leuven in Belgium.

The project involves the numerical simulation of wave scattering and propagation problems using boundary element methods, with an emphasis on high frequencies and with applications in acoustics and electromagnetics. The goal is to drastically reduce the necessary degrees of freedom by studying and incorporating the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. The required asymptotic analysis has already been carried out for a great variety of problems in the last couple of decades, yet this knowledge has not been exploited to its full extent. The challenge of the project is to bring existing ingredients together, thereby turning mathematics into applications.

The Colt Foundation is particularly interested in high quality research projects in the field of occupational and environmental health, particularly those aimed at discovering the causeof illneises arising from conditions at the place of work. Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarships in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) 2011

The MSc programme in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) is a top-level programme aimed at preparing qualified graduates to deal with contemporary tropical forestry. It provides students with direct access to the best tropical forestry teaching in Europe.

The programme is offered by a five university consortium from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Wales. The programme consists of a year of study in one of three institutions (Bangor, Copenhagen, Dresden) followed by a second study year at one of the four other institutions. The aim of the first year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable tropical forestry. This allows students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year. The first year ends with the Joint Summer Module including field work in a tropical country. Specialisation options in the second year are agroforestry systems (Bangor), socio-economics of tropical forestry (Copenhagen), tropical forest management (Dresden), environmental management and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier), or ethics in forestry and responsible trade in tropical forest products and services (Padova). The teaching staff is very active in research and students profit from their global expertise.

The SUTROFOR offers an integrated study programme with a resulting double degree that is fully recognised in all the participating countries. Category A Scholarships for Third-country nationals: Total 48.000 EUR

Category A scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and EEA/EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Furthermore, you must comply with the 12 months rule: You must not be a resident nor have carried out main activity (studies, work etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Category B Scholarships for European nationals: Total 20.000 EUR

Erasmus Mundus: Masters Scholarship Programme 2011/12 in International Performance Research (MAIPR) for International Students

unded by the European Commission, the MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) Erasmus

Mundus programme from autum 2011 will be offered by four internationally renowned academic institutions: the University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; the Tampereen Yliopisto (the University of Tampere) in Finland, the latter in cooperation with Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki); and the Arts University of Belgrade (Serbia)

Students study at two of these institutions, a home and a mobility institution. The two institutions at which you study – and either can be your home or your mobility location – will be a combination of Warwick, Amsterdam and Arts Belgrade. You also conduct fieldwork and arts research in these countries. You will spend from the beginning of the course until the December holiday break at your home institution. You then go to your mobility institution, where you will study until the end of June. When you finish your mobility period, you will be expected to complete your studies at your home university.

In addition, all students attend a summer school in Finland, run by Tampere, thereby benefitting from additional teaching and supervision by Finnish tutors throughout the programme.

Students successfully completing the programme will receive a double degree from the Universities of Warwick, Amsterdam or Arts Belgrade.

EM Scholarship Competition 2011-12 Eligibility: Erasmus Mundus has two separate competitions, Category A and Category B:

Category A scholarships are aimed at covering all the costs of the programme, therefore fees, travel and living expenses over 16 months:

Category B scholarships are considered as financial contributions rather than full scholarships:

USA:WAPPP/International Security Program Fellowship At Harvard Kennedy School

In the academic year 2010-2011, the Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School will be awarding one postdoctoral residential fellowship to an outstanding scholar in security affairs from the United States or elsewhere working to promote basic research in the broad area of international security with a particular focus on issues relating to gender. This fellow must hold a Ph.D. by September 2010. The fellow will hold his or her fellowship jointly with the International Security Program (ISP) of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (Belfer Center).

For 2008-2009, the fellowship was awarded to Dr. Megan Mackenzie, a political scientist who will conduct a comparative analysis of the existing policies and programs created to address children born of war time rape and AIDS orphans in Sierra Leone and Uganda.

Responsibilities:

The Women and Public Policy Program / International Security Program Fellow will be expected to participate actively in the weekly WAPPP and ISP seminars and also in the intellectual life of the two centers, taking part in seminars relevant to their interests and presenting papers. Research fellows will also be expected to complete a book, monograph, scholarly article or other significant publication during their period of residence.

Stipend:

The stipend for the 2010-2011 academic year postdoctoral fellowship is $34,000. Residential fellowships also provide for individual health insurance and institutional support.

UK:Postdoctoral Researcher At Oxford University

The research is funded by the Wellcome Trust, and will investigate interactions between auditory and motor areas in the brain during speech perception and production. The project will employ a variety of techniques either separately or in combination; these include behavioural measures, TMS, MEG and functional MRI.

Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a doctoral degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field. They should also have a strong background in cognitive neuroscience research and an interest in speech communication. Prior experience with at least one of the methods used (TMS, MEG or functional MRI) will be necessary, and prior experience with combining these techniques will also be advantageous. Other criteria are: autonomy through all stages of experimentation, sound knowledge of experimental design and statistical methods, and proven ability to express ideas and disseminate findings effectively. Applicants should be able to work independently as well as co-operate with other members of the research team.

The position is funded from 1 January 2011 for two years in the first instance with the possibility of renewal for a further 12 months.

UK:Abdullah Al-Mubarak Research Fellowship in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies

The College hopes to elect not later than 1 December 2010 to an ABDULLAH AL-MUBARAK RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN ISLAMIC AND MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES, with tenure from 1 January 2011. UK:Warwick Business School ESRC Case PhD Studentship 2011

One of the under-researched effects of higher education expansion in the last two decades has been increasing recruitment of graduates by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and to sectors of economic activity and occupations to which previously, undergraduate study had not been a normal route. A key strategic objective of UK government higher education and training policies and investment during the last 25 years has been to raise workforce skills levels on the assumption that this would have economic and social benefits and indeed, was essential for economic growth, innovation and national productivity in an increasingly competitive global economy. An integral aspect of the expansion of higher education was to widen access to it from previously under-represented groups and extend opportunities to socially and economically disadvantaged sections of the population.

The assessment of how far these objectives have been met is widely debated and the current labour market provides a challenging research opportunity to investigate emerging trends. There continues to be considerable concern about the extent to which the integration of this increasing population of graduates into the labour market has reflected increased levels of national skill development and utilization and how far it has led to increasing graduate underemployment. This studentship provides the opportunity for a PhD student to conduct research that builds on the Futuretrack longitudinal survey of the cohort of students that applied through UCAS in 2005-6 to study full-time undergraduate courses at UK higher education institutions (HEIs). The survey is funded by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU), which is collaborating with the University of Warwick and the ESRC to offer this studentship. It is envisaged that this will be a mixed-methods project, to take advantage of the resources available to the student. HECSU, which produces the annual What do graduates Do? analyses of first destination statistics, has an extensive database of graduate recruiters and has conducted surveys of graduates from previous cohorts during their early careers, and it may be possible for the PhD student to draw on to identify suitable case study examples of organizations or potential graduate interviewees. The studentship would be attached to the IER Futuretrack Research team, directed by Professor Kate Purcell on a project agreed with HECSU and drawing on the expertise and resources of IER, WBS and HECSU.

This fellows program is targeted at developing a new generation of scholars able to analyze and make policy recommendations about the regional political economy in the Middle East, East, South, or Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Center invites candidates with a background in economics, political science, contemporary history, sociology, law, business, and other disciplines bearing on the study of markets, politics, and economic development, focusing on the regions of the Middle East, East, South, or Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America to apply. Scholarly work should explore the ways in which the politics within and between a set of countries intersect with natural resource endowments, market conditions, technological and physical infrastructure, and cultural biases to explain existing patterns of economic development and to promote higher levels of development more effectively. * Those who have the nationality of the Republic of Indonesia and have studied the course of Natural Science in the prestigious national universities in Indonesia more than 16 years of of school education, and not more than 30 years of age when application is submitted, having “SARJANA” degree
* Those who have the aim to study the course of natural science in the master’s degree course of universities in Japan, and were permitted or are expected to be permitted to enter university
* Those who have excellent result of school record, (cumulative GPA more than 3), and are in good health
* Those who have been permitted to get scholarship from foundation by their belonging institutes, universities, or companies.
* Those who have interest in the friendly relations between the Republic of Indonesia and Japan are prepared to contribute the promotion of such relations
* Those who have not been awarded other scholarships in Japan
